Kmele- TSA in Denver is certainly on a power trip, so on behalf Coloradans, please accept this apology and do come back soon.
Michael- I’m Very pumped of your Thursday drop. Finishing up my 2 week beach vacation by listening to the Fifth while partaking in my morning margarita and watching the waves! So, I appreciate all your hard work editing the pod and providing guidance on morning libations.
Matt- Please burn Your cargo shorts. Abercrombie moved on from exploiting teens so it’s okay to change up your look.
I was going to watch Moynihan’s newer special while I was making dinner but ended up rewatching Texas again. And man... these people who had zero interest in civic matters until a crude, semi/coherent game show host ran for President seem to have delusions of themselves as some kind of super-patriots. It seems almost cruel to point out that they’re credulous stooges to a (pretty lame) celebrity cult, but they really do keep bringing it on themselves by choice. Fuck me for feeling depressed for them, I guess.
Any mention of Carole King means I need to recommend this demo version of Up On The Roof. Evidently, it’s King playing piano, but there’s some uncertainty about who is singing. See the comments for more details. Either way it’s one of the most beautiful vocal performances I’ve ever heard.
Glad to hear the Briahna Joy Gray shoutout. She’s smart and engaging and one of the best spokespeople for left politics active right now. I don’t think anyone can make totally infeasible ideas sound as reasonable as she does. I’d love to hear her challenged by the guys (and vice versa).
Oh hey, I know you fellas are fond of Jaime Kirchick & mentioned his new book (but that you were too cool to talk about it with him during the first round of press). While I’d love for you all to hop on with Jaime for a chat, I’m wondering if this might be ideal for a little 🇮🇪-🇮🇪 “historian’s chat” format with Moynihan. I’ve listened to a few pods about the book already & it sounds great, but I’d love to hear him dig a little deeper with MM. Just a suggestion - cheers!
I remember the Bicentennial and Stagflation and even Three Mile Island (I grew up in the shadow of the cooling towers). Being 50 (gasp) is odd in a world that only knows a life of Internet Access....
I'm reading REAGANLAND trying to understand the America I grew up in (as I wasn't paying much attention the first time 'round) and I'm rather shocked at the Author (Rick Perlstein) showing that there was an openly known meeting of the John Birch Society in Los Angeles County in 1978.....I was 6....shouldn't there have been BETTER adults by that time? fuck me...
If it makes you feel any better, I’m about your age (5th grade in 78), and I remember having a friend down the street whose house I played at all the time and my conservative waspy parents warning me off by dissing her parents saying “well they are John Birch Society members you know.” I had no clue what that meant, but I understood the negative tone meant it wasn’t good.
I've been working my way backwards through the episodes but decided to start at the very beginning, so I'm really enjoying listening to some perspectives, knowing "the future".
Not sure if this has been pointed out before but here's a Moynihan quote from one of the first episodes: "the washington post, which is a very very good newspaper, probably the best we have in this country..."
Crazy how the washington post has declined in such a short time.
I did the same when I had lots of time, currently around mid 2019. It’s definitely fun knowing what’s going to happen, and it’s also like a drunken time capsule.
Happy birthday, lovely Emmanuelle!
A new Fifth Column! What a wonderful thing to wake up to on my fortieth birthday!
Here is the Brooklyn Gentrification piece mentioned in this episode

Oh when did they mention that? I must have missed it or was in the later part? Absolute cringe
The joke about the different types of milk was actually pretty funny.
The Lizzo discussion (~1:49:00) is phenomenal. Clip that and save it for the "Best of..." retrospective.
As someone with spastic cerebral palsy, I promise I don't care if ANYONE says the word spaz!!!
So many people need to go on a date or something damn.

Are margaritas now considered acceptable morning drinks? How did I miss this? Do you have to add a little juice of some sort?
Splash of lime juice... and I'd vote yes, but only when you're on the beach and after 10:00 am.
I'm only about 20 minutes in and just want to say that it‘s great when you guys are in top form right up front. Loving it!

It's pronounced the way Claire Huxtable says "Sondra."

😒
I’ve never equated being a “spazz” with CP. I guess I can’t now un-know this?

The Lizzo rant was epic! I’ve never laughed so hard listening to the Fifth Column.
I laughed and I'm a Lizzo fan 🤣
