Moynihan bitching about mediocre wine is my favorite recurring bit.

Here's the exchange from 30 Rock I told my friends about when the subject of this wine came up:

“I wouldn’t expect a white lady from Whiteville to understand Street Cred.” -Tracy Jordan

“It’s White Haven, and it’s not as nice as it sounds!”- Liz Lemon

Welch's bit about how much Americans cared about goings-on in Europe back in the 1800s was fascinating. Hadn't heard the name Lajos Koshuth in a while. And it reminded me that, not all that far up the road from me in SE Ohio, one can visit the grave of Januarius Aloysius MacGahan, the "Liberator of Bulgaria." Born in the coalfield town of New Lexington, of Irish parentage, his Irish cousin General Philip Sheridan (born in the same county), persuaded him to study law in Europe. He sailed off to Brussels in 1868 and was there when the Franco-Prussian War began in 1870. Sheridan's influence resulted in him being hired as a war correspondent for the New York Herald. He was still reporting in Europe when he was asked to investigate reports of Turkish atrocities in Bulgaria in 1876 for the London Daily News. His reports on those horrific slaughters shocked the British populace so deeply that it kept the British government from assisting Turkey in the Russo-Turkish War which began the following year. Happily leading to Bulgaria's independence from the Ottoman Empire. MacGahan died of typhoid in Turkey in 1878, his body returned home six years later. Numerous monuments and streets honoring him are to be found in Bulgaria. And New Lex, as we call it, has a festival and memorial for their illustrious son each June. Think I will go this summer, but just as much for the Bulgarian food.

You MUST, if you haven't already, find a copy of the old book Foxy Ferdinand: Tsar of Bulgaria.... Oh wait here it is! https://www.amazon.com/Foxy-Ferdinand-Bulgaria-Stephen-Constant/dp/053109930X

I have an acquaintance who spent 2020 through most of 2021 locked in her house to avoid covid during which time she spent getting very high, going crazy and watching left-wing conspiracies on YouTube. From where this took her mind, she confidently informed anyone who would listen that after hurricane Ian, DeSantis hid 15,000 to 20,000 deaths in Florida. Which, I suppose, would also demonstrate an impressive managerial competence.

That would have been a far more entertaining event horizon to try to skate for sure.

The bit at the end of the episode about Hinckley performing reminds me that there is still time to get the actual John Hinckley and Squeaky Fromme to perform "Unworthy of Your Love" from the Sondheim musical Assassins:

Maybe Sarah Jane Moore could make a surprise cameo?

You can tell it's starting to have an effect on Moynihan by how increasingly audible the non-verbal sounds from his mouth become. Lol. As someone who listens to podcasts through high-end noise-canceling headphones, has more than a bit of misophonia, and experience with both drinking too much and recording and listening to my voice for professional purposes that is orders of magnitude greater than the national average, I have a real sensitivity to this sort of thing. I can usually tell when Kmele or MM are under the influence or recovering from it by the extra sounds their mouths make forming words - a little more dryness or wetness, louder swallowing, or a bit more pop to their Ps and Bs - even when they otherwise seem to be talking and acting fine. Welch however is the exact opposite, you can totally tell through his words and actions when he's loaded, but other than the slurred speech, his audio is perfect! (My big problem is that, post-covid, my lungs are fucked and there is way too much audible breathing between my words. I also do too much mouth smacking when speaking extemporaneously.)

Neither a complaint nor criticism, just a bemused observation from someone a few Guinnesses and whiskeys deep and in hour twelve of a long day painting Christmas portraits and recording voiceover auditions. Enjoy the rest of that Whitehaven!

Re; the bit about getting rid of department of education....

the always awesome Frederick Hess explains that while we might need 60 senate votes to do so, we can at least make it much less bad in the meantime https://www.aei.org/articles/putting-the-department-of-education-to-work-if-trump-cant-abolish-it/

Money quote: "......stop issuing loans to graduate students, require colleges to assume partial liability for repayment of their students’ loans, and start collecting an insurance premium from colleges as a condition for participating in the student loan system...."

Yes, this is the way! Weaponize it until you can close it down. I'd tell K-12 schools that they aren't getting another dime of fed money until all their students read at grade level.

This wasn't covered in the episode, but since this is nominally a media criticism podcast, how about the self dick-trampling of the last couple of days out of a couple of our betters in the media:

Okay, a funny thing about NZ Sauvignon Blanc specifically is that bigger brands make two cuvées - one for Americans and one for everyone else. The one for Americans is dosed with big bags of granulated sugar before bottling.

(And in a nutshell, that explains why food & nutrition policy in the US is so intractable.)

This also applies to other varietals from other countries, of course (cheap California red blends are painfully sugary). Americans love love love to talk dry, drink sweet. (What do you think most people really mean when they say “smooth”?)

This is also why tequilas like Casamigos and Clase Azul are so popular. Loaded with sweeteners

I don't think Marijuana use should preclude one from owning or buying a gun. I do think that CRACK use should. I don't think thus is at all controversial. Marijuana and firearms is much safer than alcohol with firearms (I would recommend not mixing either with shooting sports) but certainly Crack use and firearms have a long and not good legal history.
