These terrorist attacks always make me think of an exchange from Veep.

Dan: we’re tracking a school shooting in Spokane, Washington

Selina: Muslim or white guy? Which one’s better for me?

When that show was brutal it was brutal.

Oh my goodness “The Fifth Column Presents: Cargo Shorts History” better be a future project.

The New Orleans attacker situation seems uncomplicated in making sense of. That guy's job in the army was in IT and HR. The Las Vegas guy was an active duty Special Forces soldier with multiple combat deployments with an 8 month old and under a year remaining to hit retirement who made an incredibly unsophisticated and not potent explosive device, then reportedly shot himself in the head before it went off. Also, the car he was in might have had self-driving technology (not sure if that comes standard on the Cybertruck). I'm open to the idea what happened might turn out to be just what it appears to be. Weird shit happens all the time in the world. Plenty of security cameras on the LV Strip, so we'll probably get some more info to base opinions on.

It just seems a lot more shocking for multiple reasons than the New Orleans case where some dude who just happened to be a vet sought to deliver a big FU to the world as he flamed out in a blaze of glory. A guy I served in Iraq with shot his ex-wife, 3 kids, then himself, last year, on the 20th anniversary of when we invaded. He similarly had just gotten divorced and seemed to grow very religious in the weeks leading up to it. I actually considered writing TFC an email about it, but thought it might be too dark to share with people unfamiliar with the hardships of war. This guy was a brother to me literally for decades and I spoke to him 2 weeks before it happened and had no idea anything was wrong.

You should write the email, we don’t mind dark around here

Anyone else think “raw dogging the air” before Moynihan could say it?

I was fully gruntled. Love the music and pop culture talk.

Wait, this isn’t a Bob Dylan podcast? What the hell am I paying for? I thought the “ding ding ding” was a reference to Al Kooper’s tambourine in Rainy Day Woman no 12 & 35. I’ve been bamboozled. I still need to hear Kmele’s review of the flick, and his thoughts on Dylan’s catalogue pre Blonde on Blonde.

I noticed pretty early on that many of the same people who speak solemnly about “Islamophobia” are just as likely to enthusiastically & unequivocally support freedom of speech when discussing something like “Piss Christ”.

It’s all so transparently empty, yet it persists. Here’s to hoping we can all stop pretending in 2025. Personally it’s liberating not feeling a burden anymore to persuade people like this.

I’m from the greater New Orleans area and I just want the conspiracy theorists to know that the Bourbon Street bollards being down during a massive holiday wasn’t a part of some evil plan. Just watch the press conferences with our leaders. They’re all fucking idiots.

Just this morning the NBC News correspondent in New Orleans was ripping local authorities live on air because he said he was walking around and there was no protection of Bourbon Street via the numerous small side streets.

Was definitely shocking to me because recent history has shown the mainstream media being incredibly deferential to government authority. I like it, but was surprising.

I’ll leave them to it. Cantrell is a disgrace and Kirkpatrick is a joke.

Regarding the side streets, they usually have barricades up to prevent driving onto Bourbon but traffic is allowed to cut across. I guess that will change.

I'm sure New Orleans is a great city in many ways, but Hurricane Katrina showed that municipal government competence is not one of them. (Not that the state and federal governments didn't screw up in their own ways.)

The presser where the Mayor said Mardi Gras beads broke the bollards was mind-boggling. Her whole statement was deflecting blame for why they hadn’t been functioning for months/years.

I was among those who complained about what felt like months of you guys talking about Dylan last time, but that doesn't mean you should've cut it and shortened the episode. Some people liked it, and even though I hated it, I can at least feel happy that other TFC subscribers were happy about its inclusion.

Last year, I over corrected on my deferring my enjoyment of this podcast and was usually 3-5 episodes behind. Proudly, I am finally caught up and my New Year’s resolution is to go full hedon and listen when they come out.

I just need to learn to do my dishes without a podcast playing.

Just wanted to weigh in - I was gruntled by the Bob Dylan discussion. It prompted me to ask my boomer dad to go see the movie with me and he was SO excited. Also I got MeToo’d by James Toback! Mine was a totally harmless and mostly funny experience so I can joke about it but I guess some young actresses had a worse time with him. He accosted me on the Upper West Side when I was on vacation with my mom after graduating college. I knew who he was because I had just finished reading the Susskind book “Easy Riders, Raging Bulls” in which he figures as a minor character. Anyway totally insane predatory guy but not uninteresting. After I left NY he would call me at all hours of the day and night and at a country’s length away I felt safe engaging for a while til it got old. But I think at that time I actually read that book about Jim Brown - wild stuff.
