Woohoo, comment of the week! This is both my favorite podcast and favorite community of commenters. America's political situation sucks, but at least we have booze...and each other.
Appreciate the thoughtful comment. However, as a disabled OIF & OEF vet myself (piddly 10% to be fair) I have to say that I’ve been very happy with the quality of care I have received at a patient at the VA. Caveat being I get seen as part of the Durham, NC VA hospital which is across the street from the world class Duke hospital and half the doctors I see are from Duke and are obligated through some partnership to spend time at the VA. I can imagine it being a very different experience in more rural communities.
I love Andrew Shultz's gentle chide (a la the Aussie band Midnight Oil's hit "Beds Are Burning") -- he often knows when to tread a bit lightly vs. dropping the hammer all the way down.
As for Ms. Nuzzi and her quote here, all of your pod-adjacent Olivias are bright & fearless and I'm glad that she's part of the fif'-i-verse
I can just imagine Liam’s handlers before he went into the room: “Remember Liam, don’t say ‘cunt’”. I love the kid busting his balls about High Flying Birds. Even my wife, who hates Oasis, loved the video.
Yeah, that was one of the best, if not the best. Rubin is so familiar with his music and of course the creative process. Best Cave outside of the book with Sean O’Hagan
Definitely Maybe is a great record. Rock ‘n’ Roll Star is a rager of an opener that also makes want to “take my cah and drive real fah” at 100 mph. And the tom sound on Live Forever…….beautiful stuff
Yes, that Mike Reed profile in the Chicago Sun Times is well worth reading. Also, I bought his album “The Separatist Party” on Bandcamp.
Here is an excerpt from that Bandcamp link below:
“ The music draws upon a raft of influences, weaving together varied traditions and practices within a groove-oriented attack to forge something entirely new. One can glean wisps of Don Cherry’s Organic Music conception, the ecstatic fire of Pharoah Sanders, the cycling minimalism of Terry Riley, the motoric rhythms of Krautrock, the exploratory tones of Sun Ra, and clipped soul of vintage Ethiopian music within the Separatist Party’s music, but no single element arrives wholesale. Rather, the musicians have melded and transformed ideas from around the globe and across decades into a propulsive brew that says plenty about the turbulent era we find ourselves in, turning to the healing power of music to unite us, if only for a short while.”
Kev is completely justified in being pissed. Every single administration pisses on vets; the VA treats like shit the people we should treat with honor. I firmly believe out military is too large with too many in uniform...BUT these men and women answered the call and have served. They deserve better. Instead, administrations say there are no funds for them. It's shameful.
I recommend both of Hollywood's 'Honestly' podcasts mentioned on said Firehose. I started reading Mackey's book because of it and haven't been able to put it down, although it is slowing down as I'm getting to the part where he's talking about Whole Foods during the early aughts.
We're more likely to nationalize medical care and make it terrible for everyone than we are to improve the VA specifically or make it more like medicare.

They are so extraordinarily similar in both appearance and character, you’d wonder if they were sisters if you didn’t know better.
Yes. Nancy, Olivia & Olivia could be like a modern-day Larry, Darryl, & Darryl (a joke for lovers of classic 80's TV)
And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the countryside was full of what looked like, well, [KORN]….
LOL
Hopefully he went past the children of the corn. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dClKllEv5MU
Worth reading for Kev’s great comment of the week and Olivia’s quote alone, but you did good too Matt Welch!
Thanks, Laura!

A handler for Liam would last 6 months before a heart attack.
Also, Nick Cave on Rick Rubin's Tetragrammaton podcast is a great listen for anyone who enjoyed him on Reason.

Oasis covering Quiet Riot is a thing that happened.

Which of course was itself a cover of Slade.

Dayum, Hepola.
Also, I think you guys should have on Noah Smith to fight about Biden's policy record. This post is a good table-setter: https://www.noahpinion.blog/p/biden-did-stuff-and-it-looks-like

Has it really been a month since the last Members Only pod was posted?
What would be a worse thing: To be accused by craven media if 'paroting Russian talking points' or of paroting actual State Department talking points.

Fully in favor of any and all TFC/jazz drummer crossovers
