As a strict policy I pay for zero online content until the cost of my cheapness becomes at least 10X greater than the fiscal benefit. There is far, far more great free content available than I could ever consume, so why pay? This is why I freeloaded TFC for a couple years before caving in.
TFP is very close to forcing my capitulation in even less time than TFC. They have had great stuff paywalled from the beginning, but I got my fix from freebies. The weekly links to a great Douglas Murray column that I would click, read one paragraph, then be paywalled just pissed me off and made me swear to never subscribe. But the free Moynihan panels just makes me want all the paywalled stuff Welch keeps shilling here.
So if/when I pay off Bari Weiss for full access, she owes a cut to Moynihan, who owes a cut to Welch.
wait I thought messy was a characteristic of BRAT, hasn't the summer been declared officially over? I'm hoping for a demure broadcast myself (in keeping with the zeitgeist of the past 15 minutes)
Jeez, guys. As usual, I’m road-tripping tomorrow. Hoping I’ll be near enough to the Metroplex by then to listen in via cell, but more likely that I’ll miss yet another Second Sunday… I’m nothing if not consistent. Sigh. 😒
Off-topic, unless there's no topic, in which case on-no-topic, but has does anyone know anything about this guy who claims that someone besides Shakespeare wrote 37 of Shakespeare's plays? For some reason, Richard Hanania, who doesn't think Shakespeare is a good write to begin with, had him on his podcast and claims that his case is definitive.
I skipped through at 2X speed and my impression was that this is a case of an admittedly clueless neophite (Hanania) listening to a mostly-clueless polymath that stumbled into some interesting threads and drew grandiose conclusions. Maybe he has something here? I dunno.
The speed with which Hanania bought in 100% hook, line, and sinker, without any outside consultation, really diminished any credibility he held with me. There is such a huge pool of expertise in this area, ranging from interested undergrad amateurs to 80-year PhD researchers, that I suspect there would be some commentary if there was something substantial here. I'll give it a few months to see if there is any followup, then relegate it as nonsense into the memory hole.
One of Hanania’s strengths as a public intellectual is his constantly changing his mind on big issues without it ever affecting his confidence at any given moment that he’s right.
It’s a terrible vice for an actual scholar but it’s great for being discussed.
Eli's latest musical creation would have been a good addition to the soundtrack of 2004's "The Edukators". Like pretty much every German film from the early 2000s, it stars Daniel Brühl. And also like pretty much every German film, ever, its original title is much better: "Die fetten Jahre sind vorbei".
Also Balko put out another response to coleman doubling down on his George floyd claims. Coleman makes further bogus claims and buries his credibility in a deeper hole. Sometimes the best thing to do is a mea culpa
Okay, an M/O followed in quick succession by a Firehose & and (an egalitarian) 2nd Sunday -- feels like it's Christmas even earlier than Maduro's mandated Oct start date❤️(suck it Venezuela 'Murica always wins🇺🇸)
Eli’s historical podcasts are so good 😊
Eli consistently has the best t-shirts. Solid podcasts, too!
the t-shirts have become v important to the Eli *brand*
Happy “big-round-number” Birthday, Moynihan! 😜

Damn, it looks like that Free Press podcast with Taibi is actually free. Sweet! Nevermind.
I think you just created the new “vig” tier…
Dreamy walkoff music, man. Hope I can make 2nd Sunday tomorrow. Sounds like it could be messy.

Re: demure, I demur. I wouldn't count on it, or mindful, either. My chips are on messy.
Red Star Over Germany has a real Riot Grrl feel to it. Maybe Fleetwood Hack can get a record deal with Kill Rock Stars.

If anyone in DC has an extra ticket to The Free Press debate they want to unload, please let me know!
I think I'll just get AI to create that Eli Lake podcast for me instead.
