It was good of Moynihan to acknowledge on last week’s Free Press Live that Batya is his cohost.

I wasn’t aware that Powell had left the NY Times. This was one of his best pieces while there, a must-read:

Inside a Battle Over Race, Class and Power at Smith College (Feb 2021)

A student said she was racially profiled while eating in a college dorm. An investigation found no evidence of bias. But the incident will not fade away.

Nice to see Gustavo embracing both Substack and the libertarian that always has been in him.

Given their similar taste in eyewear, if Gustavo is the self-described "Mexican with Glasses", then Matt is the "[who/what?] with Glasses"? If Matt had kept his baseball nerdery local and attended Long Beach State, then he could be the "Dirtbag with Glasses," but that honor probably goes to former Phillie, Vance Worley. https://www.instagram.com/p/C5QzP6mOgYZ/

We love Gustavo! The Boys need to have him on again. Been a minute.

Re walk off music Crowded House: the music of my 80s high school years in Brisbane, Australia. One of the most charismatic bands to see live as well. Was half a comedy show & half musical genius. Was devastated when drummer, Paul Hester, took his own life. Neil Finn is a musical genius

Please excuse the repeat of musical genius - it’s only 6.40am here in Singapore & my eyes are only just waking up & I’m now going down a Crowded House archive rabbit hole

I found the characterization of K-File's reporting on Mark Robinson as "oppo research" (Members Only #226) to be a bit strange. The man is running for Governor of North Carolina, and has an extensive history of saying insane, racist, and misogynistic things. In fact, he's been quite open about it. Is the implication here that K-File's report was done in service to the other candidate, Josh Stein? Or is it more likely that K-File found those posts because Mark Robinson is a fucking idiot who made zero effort to conceal his previous insane statements? I mean, he used his full name on the porn site, for Christ's sake. He used the same username and email address across multiple platforms, lol.

One other thing. With respect to the conversation about Olivia Nuzzi + RFK, around the 53 minute mark of the episode, Moynihan repeatedly says: "it's not a story." If someone who is covering national politics for a major news outlet is sending nude pictures to a (now former) Presidential candidate, how is that not a story? And I would say, can we not separate the predictably insane reactions from Blue Anon Journo Twitter, the same people who believe the NYT is too nice to Donald Trump, from people who just find the whole thing to be sleazy and inexcusable?

Totally understand defending your friends, and not wanting to pile on. But to say that this isn't a story, and to pin the blame on the most insane Twitter personalities, especially those who are working for ultra-lefty publications, is straight up dishonest. Wouldn't it be a better defense of Olivia to say, "hey, we dont know all the facts yet. This seems really shitty. Let's wait and see what comes out. We hope she's doing okay."

Maybe I'm in the wrong here, but I think it's entirely reasonable to assume someone should disclose a personal/romantic relationship if it involves a person they're reporting on. And if it's true that she lied to her boss repeatedly, by initially denying the relationship, then NY Mag is well within their rights to suspend her for a time, or even fire her.

I hesitate to respond, since you seem to have slid into Terminally Mad mode, but by "oppo research" here I mean the conveniently-timed-for-campaign-purposes retrieval and publication of (especially though not necessarily online) information/statements/behavior of little or no relevance to his role in public life. Plenty of oppo research-style journalism is at least somewhat newsworthy, as this is, though I honestly do not give one shit that the dude visited porn shops in the aughts. (Which is not from K File, but from a different outfit previously.) And yes, he has plenty of insane/awful stuff on the record as an actual politician, that I happen to care a lot more about than whatever he did on Nude Africa, though admittedly the latter stuff is hilarious.

Respectfully, I am not in "terminally mad" mode, but I appreciate the reply.

Did she report on him, though? I didn't think she had.

Expand full comment

Respectfully, it doesn't matter.

She's a reporter covering national politics. If she's going to be in a relationship (even one that isn't serious, or just a sexual fling), then she should disclose that. It's basic journalistic ethics to disclose a personal relationship like that.

What is it about that CH song that creeps you out? Music, video, or both. Loved that song from the get-go, along with the Crowdies, and it's always smile/sad when I see Hessie. This particular song will forever remind me of the fraulein who moved me into temptation decades ago and received this song at the top of the mandatory mix tape.

Hey Matt, do you have a link to the event at UF? Is it open to non-students? I'll try and take a long lunch that day to check it out if possible. Also, if you guys want Gainesville recommendations, hit me up. We punch outside our weight class for a couple of things and there's some weird Florida specific stuff I can recommend.

Too bad you guys aren't coming another couple weeks later, as you'd be here for our annual 3 day mostly punk musical festival.

I think the lads were very kind to Nuzzi in their discussion. And I agree that the story is much more prurient interests than newsworthy. But what the hell was she thinking. Sending nudes to RFK Jr.? I know there is no accounting for taste, but really? RFK Jr.?

Are yall ever gonna mea culpa on getting the immigration damage to small towns wrong? Or do i get another round of aspersions of being a gap toothed bigot for not wanting 20k people dumped into a struggling town?

Expand full comment

We have talked about the immigration damage to small towns at least a dozen times on this podcast, including Moynihan’s reporting from Texas, and in the case of Springville mentioned the challenging impact on schools & automobile safety. We generally are not a podcast that sees our fellow Americans as a teeming mass of gap-toothed bigots.

You had multiple replies on 471 discussing your utter dismissal of the issues locals face. I am about to listen to the latest pod, so if its covered there, fantastic, but if you think youve been even keeled the whole time, i have bad news for you. Youre not coming across that way. Again, disregard if the most recent episode covers this more thoroughly. Thanks again for responding.

My dude you recommended an article containing this passage:

And while J.D. Vance’s hillbilly ancestors may not have been the inbred, possum-eating, superstitious bushwhackers of legend and lore, as they descended on Ohio from the hills of Kentucky they had more than a little in common with the Haitian immigrants Sen. Vance now spends his days vilifying in terms that would have been familiar to Fritz Hippler, the filmmaker whose 1941 propaganda film Der ewige Jude comes to its climax with images of leering kosher butchers covered in the blood of animals slaughtered in the service of “the so-called Jewish religion.”

What is that? Or do you now disagree with your rec?

JFC, if I have to answer for every article I recommend, PARTICULARLY when it's by Kevin Williamson, you can fucking lock me up now. I answer to MY words; I assume you are all adult enough to understand that my recommendation of another piece of writing is not an endorsement of every last adjective.

At the 45 minute mark you absolutely trashed rufo and his attempt to find out what happened. I think you may want to listen to that ep again if you think you didn't piss all over people concerned about unbridled immigration.

Expand full comment

Criticizing Chris Rufo's interjection in this story has literally fuck-all to do with anyone on the podcast's opinion on immigration.

Expand full comment

Perhaps you could actually investigate the facts and learn these immigrants were not “dumped” on the town. In fact, Springfield was a dying town that sought out the immigrants to fill jobs that the local industry couldn’t get filled with the local labor force.

There will be short term difficulties with immigration influxes, they have happened numerous times over our history. The people assimilated and made our country even better.

Your repeated attempts to categorize critiques of your opinions as racist or classist demonstrate how badly you want to be the victim in this situation. You are an unserious person who is wrong about this, but not because you are racist or classist.
