Aww shucks. The truth is I have neither the expertise nor the bandwidth to add anything useful to the policy discussions in the chat (though I thoroughly enjoy reading them), so I contribute what I can, which basically amounts to taking the piss.
From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.
“Sadly, our expert class has damaged their credibility in the eyes of the public far more than they seem to actually understand.”
I’m a denizen of academia and it is impossible for me to get across how absolutely true this statement is. When I’m on campus, I feel like I’m taking crazy pills listening to colleagues, admin, leadership talk about the current backlash against universities. Meanwhile, AI is automating jobs away, but literally no one wants to talk about that.
I'm catching up late to this week's releases, so this pertains to the last public episode, in which Matt eulogizes Reason's Manny Klausner, and briefly mentions the magazine's founder, Lanny Friedlander (who, like Manny, was also passionate about design!). Several years ago, in celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of Reason's (and if I correctly recall, also MW's) founding, Matt published a compassionate remembrance of Lanny and his troubled and tragic life after he drifted away from the magazine. I am very glad of Matt's (and Emmanuelle's!) efforts to make contact with Lanny before his death. I like to think that the recognition of fruits of his early efforts brought him some peace and happiness at the end of his life.
Great interview by Moynihan. It's pretty interesting listening to Weiner say he's not making excuses, but he definitely caveats nearly everything regarding how he was held accountable. I think holding him responsible for Trump's victory is pretty unfair though.
Weiner can definitely talk though. All the Dems now podcasting these days just do not have the skill that Weiner has at the format. Working in conservative talk radio has clearly exercised that muscle. Makes me wonder if his charisma at that is tied into his...proclivities/addiction of being tragically horny online.
Arch Stanton is the gift we all love but don't deserve and he's clearly earned his spot as an absolute fif' chat legend ❤️

How many times have you watched the TFC rendition of Sexual Healing?
Yes
Holy cow I hadn’t seen that one. The “wake up ya cunts” made me howl.
Happy and safe driving, Matt!

I can’t understand why Tony Wiener insists on politics. Does he have no other value or skill?
Being an asshole is all he knows. It's the perfect fit.
He’s a career politician so no.
If you listen to him speak in any of those, this the question of value and skill answers itself…

Matt, you missed the Busty Wimsatt cameo on the Moynihan Report at 1:10:45.
Noice!

Yes! That inspired me to go way back into the archives to see Lanny's Reason. HIs article on public ed was amazing.

I trust and regard those who’ve face up to their “embarrassing shit” than not. Go Anthony!
I'm in position at BBQ Saloon. It's currently an upright position, but that could change at a moment's notice.
Lord that Charlie Boys number is hideous. If those kids had to listen to that drek on the regular, no wonder they were so angry and murderous.
Matt - are you planning to hit up the Woody Guthrie Center in Tulsa?
Brad is my hero. Down with Hoosiers propaganda! Boiler up!
From Google:
The Boilermakers have reached three NCAA Tournament Final Fours and two NCAA championship games, but have not won an NCAA Championship.
Indiana has won five National Championships in men's basketball (1940, 1953, 1976, 1981, 1987)
😉
But I will always boost ALL State of Indiana collegiate sports programs. Because I didn’t go to college, see.
