These are becoming a real highlight. Thanks for sharing, Matt. And thanks for being brilliant, fellow Fifdom vagabonds.
Slightly related to Pat's email: have any of you folks watched the documentary 20 Days in Mariupol? I found it harrowing and essential viewing, especially with that conflict now relegated from the front page.
Ever since I first heard about it, I have uad my eye out for a cinema or streamer to show 20 Days in Matiupol. Just in the last few days I watched it on Frontline's streaming platform. Essential viewing, indeed. And incredibly brave for the Ukrainian journalists working for the AP to have captures all of that foortage and make it out.
Exactly how many jobs did the guild save. The tweet said that notices sent *after the initial layoffs* had been withdrawn. No numbers. Perhaps Charles was feeling too emotional to give hard numbers
At this time, there is nothing specified by either Ryan Fonseca, LAT or the LAT Guild. So how many have been withdrawn, when, and what does it mean is unclear but Charles was emotional and reactive. I wish him well.
I have never. In my entire life (Even coming from a drenched in blue. chemical factory working- union starting dad and super pro union democratic family) understood that he concept that “unions=good all the time always for everyone no matter what and how dare you besmirch them even a little, they drug us out of the depression, you little shit” crowd.
It’s literally the least critical way to think about anything. It’s legit dogma to some people.
I see their value at times. Sure. Dangerous jobs. Monopolized industries (think sports).
But people’s inability to look critically at both union strategies and effects (I’m looking at you teachers and cops) is mind numbing.
You know, I made the same silly Steely Dan Dr. Vu joke in the chat during the last Second Sunday. It got crickets. Joke theft? Not a bit of it. I doubt Matt was watching (or could even see) the chat going by. Just a case of great (?) minds thinking alike.
This mailbag feature is a great addition. And 'cheerful replies to hostile emails' could be its own category! Think about it. Cheers.
Agree with the take on the military. There are so many people who know nobody who served.
It might be interesting to see stats on the economic breakdown of people who do today. Did any of those Dave Mathews fan classmates of Kmele end up in the military?

And now Charles will never know that he was published on Substack. Godspeed Charles!
