Moynihan, you could live in the South and report on right-leaning/libertarian/conservatives every day and I don't think I'd get tired of it. Married to a Louisiana boy, and spent a good part of my 20s in Texas. There's such a fucking South-hate in the media (which I never noticed until Robert told me about it). Keep these pieces coming!

I’m a transplanted NY Jew who spent decades looking down my nose at the South, and the last few years living in the South and kicking myself daily for being such an idiot for so long. When orthodox rabbis and southern parents both coalesced around the idea of “fuck you, we’re keeping our playgrounds open” during Covid-mania, that’s when I first started thinking maybe, just maybe, I had more in common with Southern sensibilities than I thought. I’m ashamed of lots of my friends now who never ventured outside their bubble though.

Yes, this! I had the most fun of my life in central Texas...I had a much more diverse friend group there, from ethnicity to politics to socioeconomic groups.

Not only is my friend group far more diverse (across all vectors), but they have the ability to surprise me. I’m now able to predict, with uncanny accuracy, how my coastal friends will think and feel about pretty much any contemporary topic; it’s like they all drink from the same well of ideas, or get a sort of “midwit meal kit” every month with pre-chopped items. My friends here in the south retain their ability to be “people with ideas”, not “people who ARE the ideas and media they consume”. It’s a subtle but tangible difference.

As a born and raised Southerner now living up North, I can attest to the incessant South-hate

I'm from MN I'm embarrassed by my efforts at Southern accents in the past...ah well, we're all recovering xenophobes of one type or another!

Don’t feel too bad, I sound like I’m doing one of those making fun of southerners accents but I’m not. I really DO sound like I’m about to fall asleep mid-sentence. (rural East Texas like early Matthew McConaughey) Now when I go home people always say I’ve lost my accent. Nawh, nawt if I’m standin in Seattle ;)

It is weird how much of that you see on tv and in movies though. I guess it’s just lazy writing. Like if you want to indicate “bad guy” you have the character kick a puppy. If you want to indicate “dumb guy” he has a southern accent. We were watching a show the other day where the old racist senator had an Alabama accent - except he was supposed to be the senator from New Jersey!

Yes! The uneducated Southerner is such a hangover from the Dukes of Hazzard.

It’s even funnier if you know neither of the Duke boys was Southern :)

And I love how you describe your accent! Did you ever see that documentary film about a car giveaway in Beaumont? Hands on a Hard Body?

John Fetterman giving the traditional victory speech instead of several minutes of sexy dancing on stage to Clarence Carter's "Strokin" was the letdown of the election cycle.

He’s just leaving that for Tubin’s eventual congressional run.
