The Munk debate on trusting the MSM is really one to behold. Taibbi and Murray absolutely cleaned up. Oh and Malcolm Gladwell called Matt Taibbi racist 4 times during the debate...
My friends are always surprised when I say I don't care for Malcolm Gladwell. The truth is that I think he is a good essayist: he comes up with neat insights that purport to explain surprising phenomena. His essays provoke thought and investigation. Unfortunately, when his ideas are tested at length -- by Gladwell himself in book form -- they often fall flat. He relates a few compelling anecdotes, sometimes getting up to n=3 or n=4. He cites some narrow study. And then, all of a sudden, the reader is told that we've established some universal result. Then, of course, society adds insult to injury by reciting his core conclusions, unsubstantiated as they may be, as plain facts.
His voice was incredible. When I think of great vocalists (in non operatic music) I think first of him, Ella Fitzgerald and Nat King Cole. In the words of Duke Ellington they are "beyond category".
My spouse got very angry with me because I laughed when he told me about the fancy heat pump he wants to buy because of the Inflation Reduction Act (in my defense, he said all those words in the same sentence). Babe, you know who you married.
I thought Jesse was some random Israeli in the background. Awesome Fifth appearances this week across the board. Just finished the bari Weiss episode this morning. Fifth Live🤘🏼
“We have to believe that the people who compose our professions can place their professional obligations above their personal ideological positions. If you don’t believe we are capable of that act of transformation, then you can’t have trust in any of the institutions that make up liberal society.” —Malcolm Gladwell’s closing statement in the Munk debate, accidentally making the opposition’s point for them.
I’ve liked some of Gladwell’s stuff, and Goldberg’s at least always been game to defend her positions, but they both came off as smug and tone-deaf through a lot of the debate. Live audience thought so too, if the huge swing in the before-and-after vote was any indicator.
Where can one see the photo of Moynihan gawking at the soldiers holding rifles? Not that I want to see Moynihan, I want to check those soldiers out myself. thx
Not mentioned, due to an abundance of modesty, Matt’s Lanny Friedlander profile & accompanying video, which he briefly highlighted for the Reason drive.
I think Kmele or (Substack) messed up in the posting of the twitch stream starting.
I saw in my email this morning an email from Substack stating Kmele posted to what looks like is his own Substack page (probably started pre fifth migration) the notice of the Second Sunday stream on twitch. So I believe it happened, but was never sent out to the Fifth Substack page.
I guess you were fine if you get twitch notifications. I do not because this is the only thing I can ever see myself going on twitch for lol, so i missed it as well.
I hate to nitpick (not really though, I'm quite the pedant...) but Yael stretched the meaning of "Mizrahi" quite a bit with her playlist (which features a few songs from Greek-inflected Yehuda Poliker, a song by Ashkenazi Idan Raichel which isn't particularly Mizrahi in style, and something by Netta Barzilai, which just should be forgotten 🤣). Still a good playlist though for "Israeli" music. I suggest adding a few by Yishai Ribo (a religious subset of Mizrahi), Nitzacht Iti Hakol by Amir Benayoun (might only be available when searching in Hebrew characters), plus if you don't have issues with sleezeballs (Zohar Argov and Omer Adam are in the playlist after all) then Eyal Golan is a *must*, you can't understand contemporary Mizrahi music without including him. I'll send more privately as I think of them
What makes a good narrative storyteller? I think my dad, a CPA, is a master of the comedic vignette. Tight but vivid, just enough color, nails the punchline, if there is one. Moynihan is very funny in that way. It can’t just be the Irish thing.
I cannot find your normal weekly episode from last week or the Sunday episode anywhere! It’s not in my Apple podcast app as usual, not email nor your Substack page but this writing says there were these episodes. Help!
Seriously y’all, catch that Ask a Jew episode. MM is good, and Yael and Chaya Laya are great.

Yup. Sounds like many on the left right now. Cite one study out of context and voila: ‘reality.’
And as we know using the R word in 2022 parlance means: You have no real argument 🔥🔥❤️
I’ve seen that Elvis clip before. So insane. Homie is luh-hoded! But he still sounds great. A true pro.

Polis 2024 so I can stay married
Polis and Raimondo are my long-shot hopefuls for 2024.
😳🤣🤣🤣🔥

Next visit to Yad Vashem I’m planting a tree for you, Matt. Thank you for all the love 🥰
The Moynihan pod was hilarious! I have the Eli Lake and Nick Gillespie ones downloaded next...

Did I miss the Second Sunday gang hang?

Thanks for explaining that. I don’t get Twitch notifications either, checked Substack and email a few times, then gave up

Feel free to add your own favorites - it’s open 🙌
That’s an amazing track! The whole album is gold. Also love that someone named Connor Smith is so well-versed in Israeli rock 😂
Ishai Ribo is the best. I love him.

😂😂😂
Late suggestion for the Holy playlist: "Way Down in the Hole" by Tom Waits.

So it’s white lotus then?
