I just stumbled upon this great interview with/profile of Moynihan from 2007.
My favourite parts:
- “he’s been asking for a fight since infancy”
- “Moynihan is a natural wiseass, with a knack for tackling topics that allow him to show it.”
- “[David Cameron]’s not getting caught masturbating in public parks like half the Tories. They get caught with a stocking around their neck, poppers, and gay porn.”
- “There’s nothing more fun than writing about pathetic, delusional people.”
Our boy certainly hasn’t changed in the past 16 years.
I also really liked his reflection on defecting from the left:
- “My first reaction, having been a member of the left, was like this…self-criticism session where I said ‘Well, maybe I am. Maybe I have internalized the patriarchal hegemonic male…,’” he says. “And then I said, hang on, these people are absolutely out of their fucking minds.”
No offense to Matt and Kmele, but Michael is my favorite because I really appreciate people who are not only willing to say the Emperor has no clothes, but that the little boy in the crowd is underdressed too. In the Trump age we've lost the ability to say two sides can be equally right or equally wrong. Joseph McCarthy was a lying demagogue AND the CPUSA was an arm of the Soviet Union committing espionage in this country. Michael is one of the last people I see today really doing that.
You know far be it from me to engage in gratuitous stereotypes, but that Triumph sketch really illustrates why Gen Xers like me like to claim we were the last great generation. Humor in the 70s and 80's was based on sarcasm and making people feel uncomfortable. Everything was about cutting through the phoniness and BS that characterized American traditions. Our comedy hero was David Letterman who was praised for turning the phony niceness of late-night TV on its ear. Today I am seeing article after article bashing Letterman because he dared to ask people like Paris Hilton uncomfortable questions. It is strange how much Millennials and Gen Zers are actually re-embracing a lot of the strict limitations and roles that characterized pre-60's generations.
The Triumph sketch made me laugh. Where are those fine young people now, years later? Which will come closest to spelling my name correctly on the coffee cup? Fuzzy memories of being against early speech codes coming to campus during the Clinton Administration...
Easter is next weekend if you're a member of the only faith that's permitted in the modern LP. There's an exception for Latin Mass papists, but you have to form lots of babies first, get an annulment, and marry someone young enough to be one of your own kids.
Getting a bit white-pilled today catching up on my jam-packed podcast queue. Kennedy's take on Spring Break had me feeling deprived, poor. No, my prom wasn't that interesting, either, ma'am.
Speaking of Kennedy, was listening to a livestream of a Brooklyn refugee who spoke highly of you all, and said that he wasn't sure why you hadn't had him as a guest. Malice aforethought is a concept from the days when my brain was less scarred.
I'm also working through the people who need an explanation for everything. Tom Smykowski's "Jump To Conclusions" mat is needed more than ever. https://control-h.org/?p=4144 Maybe there's no conclusion. Maybe the root cause doesn't matter?
But, back to Kennedy's Spring Break podcast, no, you're not allergic to coconut rum after that wild time. Really.
Oh man... Triumph. 😂 our fav was the bit he did at the Star Wars Movie premiere. “Which one of these buttons calls your parents to come pick you up?” 😂
Ooof, I felt terrible bailing on Easter (worse after my mother said she’d have gotten lamb if I came), but this weekend my spouse is dealing with an unforeseen plumbing crisis & I cannot lie, I do love going full-spring on Easter weekend. In theory, I’m making leek, fennel & ricotta ravioli with artichokes & peas tomorrow. And if my car has been liberated from sickbay on Monday, I’m checking out all the lambies.

P.S. Oh and I like the impressions too.
This is bait
My band name pick was “The Invisible Hands”
Mine was The Lazy Fairies, so I win.
Also good, respect
The apparent deradicalization of Matt’s daughter is one of the happier subplots in the Fifdom
South Park as teenager deradicalization device, put it in all the schools.

This conversation between Fifth adjacent brain boxes, Glenn Loury and Jonathan "Kindly Inquisitors" Rauch, landed today as well...

Happy egg hunting everyone!
I'll be eating ham and celebrating Jesus' triumph over kosher food laws.
That track suit really ties the photo together.
"please understand, I know I look like a dog, but I identify as a shin guard."

Happy Early Easter, y'all
Was I really drunk last night or did I see M. Moynihan on CNN???????
Yes.
Am I the only one still stuck on the Cheney pic? That's gotta be some kind of optical illusion. If not, that explains the way he smiles.

I skipped a seder on Wednesday with my mom and her friends. I couldn’t motivate to get out to Long Island 😬
Matt, you’ve been really quiet on Twitter after last night’s game. 😉
Looks like it was taken mid sneeze.
