the title 9 stuff addressed in the FIRE conference is an ongoing civil rights nightmare. It is straight out of Kafka and I'm scratching my head that it hasn't been challenged in federal court. It is transparently a violation of due process. Radiolab did a series on this, "In the No." I don' think they meant it to be infuriating example of lack of due process, but that's what it came across as. https://radiolab.org/podcast/no-part-1
I know, right? Now the only thing I can listen to is their economics podcast, "Planet Money." It hasn't been screwed up as badly as most the rest of NPR (which I used to appear on somewhat frequently...but no more).

I was gonna post this under #176 but I'm usually several days behind in my listening, so I'll post it here instead. There was discussion of one of Levon's daughters having a music career of her own. I thought folks might enjoy this performance by Levon with his daughters. I know I sure do:
BTW the song was written by Laurelyn Dossett but Levon's version is better. He could really wring the emotion out of the song. (For another example, compare The Band's original version of The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down to the awful version by Joan Baez.)
Can I come on the pod for a future Dylan-related segment? I’m pretty sure I know at least as much about him as Moynihan, and nobody else I know gives a shit about the subject (“hE cAn’T sInG!”). I have a few stray thoughts I forgot to mention till now. Maybe you, Matt, already know all this, but it might be of interest to someone else here, and if nothing else, I’ll have the satisfaction of hearing myself talk (so to speak):
About there being no more protest songs after “Hurricane”: There’s an outtake from Infidels (1983) called “Julius and Ethel,” a defense of Moynihan’s favorite TOTALLY NOT GUILTY power couple. Another deservedly-forgotten protest song (though pre-“Hurricane”) is “George Jackson” from 1971. I hope to God there doesn’t turn out to be a more recent outtake called “Jeffrey Epstein,” or something like that.
The Goldwater talk, and Dylan’s positive mention of him in Chronicles, made me think of these lines in “I Shall Be Free No. 10” from Another Side (1964): “. . . if you think that I'll let Barry Goldwater / Move in next door and marry my daughter / You must think I'm crazy.” But that was 40 years before Chronicles, and besides, neither text should be taken at face value.
About there being more to “This Land is Your Land” than meets the ear: There’s a lesser-known version Guthrie recorded that includes a verse that’s explicitly anti-private property, bringing the commie theme out into the open. Uncle Joe would’ve been proud of his Okie comrade.
I’d never heard of Sixto Rodriguez till a few months ago when Spotify started playing what sounded like an extremely lame rip-off of “It’s Alright Ma” for me, until I asked it to stop. But apparently he had a huge fan base in South Africa for some reason.
Ok it is 11:30 in the South Bay and I am still waiting for those Category Eleventeen rains that were supposed to decimate the area. After transplanting here from NoCal 15 years ago I am starting to think Angelenos have a bit of a problem with rain.
I have to hand it to Moynihan, he really DGAF what people think about his shoes.
Or his ankles
That is a brave commitment to the Steve Urkel/Thom Browne pant length https://www.thombrowne.com/us/shopping/paisley-canvas-straight-leg-trouser-19722864
Come on, the worst thing about that photo is the fact that it shows them only drinking *water*.
Are those orthopedic?
AMA in the chat would be fun!

Man, I use to love listening to Radiolab, back when NPR was tolerable.
I know, right? Now the only thing I can listen to is their economics podcast, "Planet Money." It hasn't been screwed up as badly as most the rest of NPR (which I used to appear on somewhat frequently...but no more).
Independently drunk, just the way we like it 🐼

Where that Zoom link at fella?
Has a link been provided?
Not yet. Last time it was on here, so keep up over the next 45 minutes. They also might be using the same link as last time, but I am not sure.
danke schon
Does anyone want to volunteer to create some fan art of the lads spraying their adoring fans with an absolute torrent of hot, sticky content?
I’ll believe it when I see/hear it. The content, not the art.
Release the Second/Third Sunday tapes!
OK.
My man.
Zoom link?
Same question here.

From what I've gathered in the comments, there wasn't enough music talk this week. Accordingly, I support your nomination for some Dylan-talk time.
Looking at the photo - um. Didn’t Laura have a place to put her purse? Where was the green room people?
Maybe worried Michael would rifle through it looking for DNA for cloning experiments?
Ha!
I noticed that too!
Turn off the spigot!
(Cackles, points, cranks)
I just don’t get Bob Dylan.
