In an impulsive moment of distress and over earnestness ( probably the result of Russ Roberts' tweets), I did a Gentles for Jew thing this week and I wish I hadn't! I sent the rabbi of our local synagogue/school an email to offer the support and physical barrier of my Gentile friends if they get protested or feel pressured and want protection. I wish I could take that one back - it's such an embarrassingly silly offer considering I live in a pro-Israel area. (Like offering to send Turkey some cats.) Maybe the rabbi got a much-needed chuckle out of it. BUT, I'm willing to bet that other Gentiles/Christians are making similar offers to support Jewish neighbors in places where it matters.
I think it was a very nice thing to do. My nephew’s church took a bunch of food (casseroles and pies are hillbilly love notes;) to the nearest (only) synagogue in town, which is a little silly too if you break it down, but I don’t think people know WHAT to do. It is very distressing to watch and be unable to help. I’d love to buy the Noo Yawker construction guy a beer or three.
I absolutely love that! I'm a Southerner, and food is love down here too. You're right - it's hard to know what to do, how to love our neighbors right now.
This is blackmail :) You know I’m genetically unable to be rude and ignore this.
Okay, I like a homemade crust (half butter half shortening recipe) but a store bought 9” crust will do as long as it doesn’t have holes and you brush a little egg on before you pour in the filling. The main thing that makes a pecan pie is fresh pecans. I order them in the shell from Potter Country store in Texas (I move for work all a lot) but they have shelled too. They’re always the freshest! Believe it or not pecans from Georgia for example actually taste different than Texas pecans. https://www.pottercountrystore.com/collections/fresh-pecans
Baking time varies widely depending on the oven. I’ve made this recipe in about 10 different houses over the years and the cooking time is from 45-70 minutes. I always do a “test” pie I’ll just have to eat myself if it isn’t perfect ;) before I make one to take somewhere so I can time a new oven.
Preheat the oven to 350°F for at least ten minutes.
Beat the eggs, add in and mix together the sugar, the corn syrup, the bourbon, and the vanilla. Mix in the milk, flour, melted butter, and pecans.
Pour the filling into an uncooked piecrust. Bake for 50-55 minutes or until set and browned on top (less time if you skip the bourbon but why would you do a thing like that)
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup dark corn syrup (you can use the light syrup if you’re a wuss;)
3 large eggs, beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 tablespoons bourbon (Garrison Brothers is good)
2 tablespoons whole milk
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
4 tablespoons salted butter, melted
1 cup pecan halves and quarters preferably shelled fresh
If you find this recipe not sweet enough you can split the sugar into half white and half brown. Using unsalted butter also makes it sweeter. I like the salty sweet combo. I sometimes add another 1/2 cup of pecans if I’m making it for a real pecan lover.
If you can get it, a scoop of Bluebell Homemade Vanilla ice cream on top finishes it out nicely. You can also cut it once it cools and then individually bag the pieces to freeze and eat when you get a craving. 30 seconds in the microwave and it’s like fresh baked!
Saved into my recipe app with many thanks! And no, I would never skip the bourbon, though since my partner stopped drinking seven years ago, it’s limited to cooking (psssst if you’re in my kitchen and need it, check the bottle of vanilla labeled β. The vanilla bottle labeled α is the real stuff. Prob unnecessary precaution but keeps me from worrying)
My dad’s family was Southern from way back, my mom’s upstate NY ditto. So most of the time I’m super polite until an interlocutor crosses this invisible border and WHAM yankee all the way!!! It can be quite useful but one does catch more flies with honey. Or pecan pie as the case may be. Thanks again ❤️
We may have identified the problem. Places most likely to have Gentiles for Jews support, such as your nephew's church, are the places where Jews don't need it - the Christ-haunted, pro-Israel South. Growing up, I thought anti-Semitism died w/ the Nazis. I heard a lot of anti-Yankee talk, but I never heard an anti-Jew or anti-Israel word until I moved north.
I’m really surprised by how much there is and it’s kinda freaking me out. What else is bubbling just under the surface of civility…
I spent the first 18 years of my life in small town Texas and I literally never met a single antisemite. We had a Jewish Japanese dentist from Georgia who talked like a Bubba Goldberg but looked like Mr. Miyagi - nobody cared - he had a heavy hand on the nitrous ;) You’re right, there may have been a smidge of anti-Yankee-ism… but I too thought that antisemitism was all old Nazi stuff that ended in the 40’s and 50’s. Now that I think about it, when I moved North in the military I was really surprised how many “races” everyone was split into. Dominicans hated Mexicans who hated Puerto Ricans who hated Italians who hated the Irish… I may have some of that mixed up but you get my point. I guess in small towns with only one bar near the plant you get over that crap pretty fast if you want to drink beer and not get punched in the face :)
There should be gentiles pounding pavement railing against Hamas terror, but what I think is a really big missed opportunity is there are not members of the secular/liberal Iranian diaspora making common cause with, and holding joint demos with people who support Israel's right to exist and right to self defense.
Make no mistake, the same Iranian mullahs that order Iranian demonstrators for democracy and freedom from hijab to be machingunned, are behind the "Virtue/Vice" police that beat Mahsa Amini to death for showing a bit of hair under her hair scarf. Those mullahs also give guns, money, and training to Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iraqi shia militias you will never have heard off.
This is a great time for secular Iranians many of whom who have been arrested, imprisoned, executed, by those mullahs etc, to stand beside Israel, and remind the US that you can't support Israel without doing something about the people most hell bent on destroying Israel, which starts with Iranian "Supreme Leader" Khamenei. We already know there is a lot of pro-Israel sentiment in Iran. At a recent soccer match in Iran, when some dupe started waving a Palestinian flag, the crowd started chanting, "You can shove that flag up your ass." There is more support for Israel in secular Iran and the secular Iranian diaspora than there are on college campuses across the US! IMHO, it is a missed opportunity if Iranians and supporters of Israel don't make common cause to shine the light firmly on the root of this cancer: The Islamic Republic of Iran. On a related note, my commentary on the intel failure in Israel that set the stage for the raid. https://technoskeptic.substack.com/p/thoughts-on-the-intelligence-failure
This is a great point. Am I with Iran/NK/Russia/radical Muslim extremists?
Or am I with the US/Israel/etc. ?
Hmm the choices are so tricky...
I almost wish we could just make a big "prisoner" swap. We can bring the Israelis back to the US, and trade back all the Palestinian supporters/lovers of Hamas/Iran to go spread their gospel of diversity/decolonialism/terrorism/DQSH to the Islamic world and see how that works out for them. They seem to hate the US and what it standards for anyway.
Now they can truly be free to experience life in a utopia where whites and jews are treated like the moral underclass the left claims they are.
Still trying to wrap my head around the Cooper Union story. Students were given extra credit to join the pro-Hamas walkout, chant for an intifada in NYC, try to break down the doors of a library where Jewish students were hiding, the president of the university is escorted out of the library by security, students call the police for help, and the NYPD officers are turned away by the university?
I’m getting the distinct impression that this mask-off rabid antisemitism is here to stay. We had the public backlash and they mostly doubled-down.
Well, when they say “this is what decolonization looks like”, “this is what justice looks like”, I hear them loud and clear. When they say that burning down cities is necessary, assaulting people is good, justice “by any means necessary”, there will be no ambiguity in my mind what they mean.
Well and also the police/security saying that "it was no big deal they were only beating on the doors and windows for like 10 minutes at most". Which sounds pretty scary if you are inside?
Tbh he’s not that interesting in interviews bc he prefers to express his ideas rather than engage in a conversation. That said, I’d like to hear Moynihan slice and dice his prosody in real time
yeah i've long followed his writing but he really is an absolutely bore on basically every podcast appearance i've ever heard him on. while i do think he has a few areas of legitimate expertise he frequently gets in over his skiis on topics where he lacks such expertise but talks with the authority of an expert.
also moynihan and deboer have some minor beef from years back. i can't even remember what it's about just that that deboer dismissed moynihan as some "red-faced guy" lol
I subscribe to FdB's substack and enjoy a fair amount of his cultural criticism, but his thinking (if you can call it that) on Israel and foreign affairs in general is tedious first semester of college guy who just read Zinn and Chomsky. He's not worth the time or effort.
If you're getting Danny on the show, that's awesome. He's been hilarious throughout this troubling time (the Counting Jews video is fantastic).
As to not enough gentiles speaking up, I would like to see more and am thankfuI that you guys, Stephen Miller and others have been lovely at standing up. A bigger issue for me, to quote Philip Roth, are Jews kashering Hamas-supporters (Tlaib, Sarsour, Corbyn) for the goyim. They go out of their way to use their Jewish identity to transform antisemitic conspiracies, bigots who declare their enemies to be of (((certain genealogies))), and laying wreaths at terrorist graves into generic sympathy for Palestinian victims and reject any criticism or tempering voice. The legitimizing of hatred is sadly very real in certain parts of the community.
I'd so join a gentiles for Jews rally....point me toward one PLEASE and I'm there...or perhaps I should start one.
PS Matt, for some reason I hadn't connected that you lived in Carroll Gardens. I lived there for 5 years back in the early '00s at Summit & Henry. It's an amazing neighborhood and I miss it often. It's where I lived on 911; the street and tops of cars were lined thick with soot from the human and other remains that blew east into Brooklyn that day. Debris fell and landed on our stoop that we eventually had encased and preserved: pages from the Standard & Poor, pay stubs, and 2 types of flyers, all with perfectly singed edges. A horrific, surreal, and eerie memory that will forever live within me.
The (awesome) video of the New Yorker confronting the coward taking down the signs had my heart racing and my soul cheering. But it does make me feel like in this era of understaffed law enforcement, widespread gun ownership, and performative politics, we’re in for a period of ugly vigilantism. Some of it I think may even be necessary, but I’m sure not looking forward to any of it.
Aren’t there any Fifth Column progeny who’d like to design tee shirts and charge extortionate prices for them? Seems a missed opportunity. Or maybe you spoil them. Try cutting their allowances
If I could wave a magic wand, Martin, I'd make it so! Btw, are you a big fan of best comedy/assassin movie ever, Gross Point Blank, or just a coincidence that you have same name as lead character?
Im worried Oct 7th will be in vain given the thousands of Palestinians civilian deaths that have resulted. We can keep blaming Hamas if that makes you feel better! The dehumanizing language coming from Israeli officials reminds me so much of Nazi propaganda. I find it ironic and chilling. And alas, the neocons are alive and well
The neocons are alive and well? That’s a little reductive in light of the complexity of the circumstances, no? For what it’s worth, I’m not a neocon. I’m your standard issue, liberal public school teacher who pays union dues. I’ve spent the last 20 years preparing kids with disabilities for post-secondary education and/or vocational training so they have career options aside from the military (although many do join the military and I respect that). War is ugly and brutal, and I think most humans favor avoiding it. But Israel is a sovereign nation that has the right to defend and protect its citizens, whether we like it or not. I understand that how they do so is the contentious part of the wider discussion. What escapes me, though, is why so many of us in the states think we have the answer or know better. That type of super imposed morality strikes me as incredibly arrogant. And I don’t mean to presume anything about your background info or life experience on the topic. Maybe I’m arrogant for presuming Israel has the right to respond militarily. I don’t know what the “right” thing to do is, but I don’t think many of us do. What I know is it’s a tragedy, and if it was my family or my country, I’d want justice.
I’ve heard Robert Wright argue that Israel should declare a cease fire because escalating the conflict will only serve to further radicalize a young generation of Palestinians. I see that point. But if Israel doesn’t respond, isn’t it plausible the children who witnessed the slaughter of their loved ones on 10/7 could also be radicalized from the injustice of their country rolling over and saying, “Okay, Hamas, we give”? You think those kids won’t want vengeance? I’m not advocating for gratuitous violence, but calling for an immediate cease fire is an easy principle to stand on because it’s unrealistic, and it gives those calling for it the opportunity to appear righteous and moral. That action will have consequences, too, likely beyond what any of us has the power to predict.
Apologies for the long response. Brevity is not one of my strengths.
I am not sure why you are blaming Israel but my guess is just good old fashion antisemitism. The likes of which I have never witnessed in my lifetime.
Hamas spent 2 years training to behead babies. Hamas always strikes when it looks like they are going to be marginalized. In this instance it was the signing of a peace deal between Saudi & Israel. Hamas can’t monetize peace, Hamas needs terrorism and a people it can exploit (Palestines).
I would extend you some good faith if instead of blaming the victims of a Jihadi terrorist attack, you acknowledged it was barbaric and it occurred. If you asked for the 200 hostages to be freed & then made your pledge for peace. But you just went straight to the antisemitism.
To be clear, in Gaza, what the majority of parents want for their kids, the highest status one can achieve in Gaza is to become a Jihadi Martyr.
In Israel parents want their kids to become Doctors.
Which culture is to blame for radicalization of their youth? To further clarify, the 2 state solution. Has been seriously offered to the Palestines 5x. Each time they reject the solution. Hamas doesn’t want a 2 state solution, Hamas want the eradication of Jews and Israel. That is in their founding documents. It is their mission statement.
I get that many people want peace and a better future for the Palestinian people. It is just that nobody in the region, other than Israel, has ever offered them a country & a better future. Not Egypt, not Jordan, not Syria, not Iran, Iraq, Saudi, or any other country in the region. 23 Arab countries and not one has ever offered to take the Palestines.
Engage with some good faith or take your double edged sword & the Jew-hate and go find one of the 1000’s of pro-jihadi comment sections.
I can’t even have a civil conversation with you if you’re going to smear me as an antisemite, so I’m guessing you aren’t interested in that. You are a very unserious person and not worth arguing with! Thanks for my favorite “everyone that isn’t pro-Israel is an antisemite” discourse. So revelatory. Fucking psycho!
Honey, you were never looking for a civil conversation. Not all anti-Zionists are antisemites, but all antisemites are anti-Zionists.
You can’t even begin to debate these issues in good faith. You’re merely here for the opportunity to gaslight anyone whose fact based opinions differ from your feelings.
I’m thrilled to be branded a “fucking psycho” by everyone who justifies the beheading of children by a radical jihadist terror group.
The Palestinians have done a pretty good job of dehumanizing themselves what with their explicit/tacit support of terrorism and their skyrocketing population despite allegedly living in an "open air prison unfit for human habitation".
If it is so terrible maybe don't double your population every 15 years?
Anyway, it is a pretty simple question overall? Stand by the functional modern state with an economy improving all our lives and modern values? One that treats its Muslim minority fairly well.
Or stand by a bunch of crazy violent people hoping to drag society back into the dark ages whose future state would likely at best resemble Syria, ISIS, or SA at best, and where success would almost certainly lead to pogrom.
The terrorists operating in close proximity to their homes, ensuring that a proportional military response causes as much harm to innocents as possible, are animals.
What part of Gaza was occupied on October 6? Don't say Ashkelon or Sderot - they are no more occupied than Gdansk or Lviv or Kaliningrad dozens of other cities whose demographic makeup was also violently altered in the 1940s.
I guess if you are talking to a tankie or Marxist-Lenninist… sure… there’s definitely antisemitism on the far left. Most leftists say it as a form of solidarity with Palestinian struggle. The majority of leftists I read want to see a singular democratic state for Arabs, Christians, and Jews…. Quite frankly, I think that’d be a lovely idea. Most of my views do come from Jews on the left and they’re mostly not Zionist. Are they the bad jews because they don’t support Netanyahu’s far right policies?
Yes some part of this invasion feels like Bibi trying to save face. Eliminating Hamas seems like such an unachievable goal that it kind seems like propaganda.
Wow. All this arguing about whose deaths matter more and which fucktards in charge are more to blame for a legacy that is also being argued that none of us actually understand. This shit is right up there with the baby-killing discussion in the beginning of #425. "Well, ACTUALLY"...this whole thing is super fucked up. Glorifying killing by anyone, for any reason, is shit. Period.
Being concerned about picking a side and debating whether a picked side is the "right" or "wrong" side, is a fucking stupid way to spend one's time.
The second best thing I saw in Brooklyn at this march yesterday (the best thing I saw was Moynihan), was a Pride flag that had been modified to include the Palestinian flag within it. Got pics but don’t think I can post them here?
Matt, you always put so much time into this. It has not gone unnoticed!
“The other three Fifths” isn’t how you should refer to Kmele,
Matt. SMDH.
that had to be intentional.

If I could wave a magic wand, Martin, I'd make it so! Btw, are you a big fan of best comedy/assassin movie ever, Gross Point Blank, or just a coincidence that you have same name as lead character?
Don't rush to judgement on something like that until all the facts are in!
This response from Israel is only going to radicalize future Hamas. It’s all just kind of a double edged sword.
Hamas radicalized Palestinians.
Iran radicalized Hamas.
Lol
What’s worse than gouging eyes, raping women, burning bodies, killing babies. Omg they may get worse!!
It is not very much of a calculation.
I feel like you could maybe do better researching the history of Hamas. There’s a lot of missing context from the lame stream media https://thedigradio.com/podcast/hamas-w-tareq-baconi/
What dehumanizing language? Calling Hamas animals? That’s insulting to animals. Not buying your crap
Are these people animals? https://x.com/sarah_hassan94/status/1718146972144570678?s=46
The terrorists operating in close proximity to their homes, ensuring that a proportional military response causes as much harm to innocents as possible, are animals.
As I said, Hamas. They are not animals as animals are not evil.
“In vain”? There was a goal here? What was it? What the fuck are you talking about?
Context? Occupied land and revenge.
When your tribe chants from the river to the sea we know what you mean.
Totally not a Zionist talking point at all lol
What part of Gaza was occupied on October 6? Don't say Ashkelon or Sderot - they are no more occupied than Gdansk or Lviv or Kaliningrad dozens of other cities whose demographic makeup was also violently altered in the 1940s.
The West Bank is occupied you silly goose!
The West Bank is not part of Gaza. Gaza has been free from Israel since 2006.
Correct
Talking point? It’s your chant. Which means annihilation of Israel. And we know how it’s done. October 7.
No one is a bad jew for not supporting Bibi. His head is gonna roll after this war is over.
Yes some part of this invasion feels like Bibi trying to save face. Eliminating Hamas seems like such an unachievable goal that it kind seems like propaganda.
There is a huge area between Bibi and the end of Israel. Like massive. I’m in that area.
Our feelings? Are you calling us narcissists?
facts dont care about your feelings
It was you who wrote: “We can keep blaming Hamas if that makes you feel better!“
All Lives Matter :)
Not sure what you mean by that, but I'm sure over beers we'd have a clearer understanding.
The second best thing I saw in Brooklyn at this march yesterday (the best thing I saw was Moynihan), was a Pride flag that had been modified to include the Palestinian flag within it. Got pics but don’t think I can post them here?
